Benjamin McKenzie Schenkkan was born on September 12, 1978, in Austin, Texas, United States to Pieter Meade Schenkkan, father, an attorney, and mother Frances Victory Schenkkan, a poet. He adopted his name McKenzie from his paternal grandmother’s maiden name.
McKenzie attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, where he met and became friends with Drew Brees, the future Super Bowl MVP. He later joined Stephen F. Austin High School and became one of the school’s soccer team players. After successful completion of his high school, McKenzie proceeded to the University of Virginia to major in economics and foreign affair. He has since preferred using McKenzie for a stage name to divert confusion from the actor Ben Shenkman.
